They get frustrated. They turn their emotions off. They ignore you right back. They make it seem like they couldn’t care less about you because they hate the thought of being the one who cares more.
They make excuses for you. They decide you must have been busy with work or broken your phone or ended up in the hospital to visit a loved one. They give you the benefit of the doubt because they don’t want to believe they wasted their time on you.
They don’t even know you have been ignoring them. They are too busy with their own lives to realize.
They overanalyze every little detail of what they said and did during your last handful of conversations. They wonder whether they chased you away. They worry whether you have found someone else. They freak out until you talk to them again.
They post the most attractive photos they can find across social media in order to lure you back in — but they would never admit they are aiming to impress you. They will claim they are just living their best life.
They check to see if you have watched any of their stories or liked any of their photographs since you have gone MIA. Then they roll their eyes and swear they knew you were going to be another one of thosepeople. It doesn’t surprise them.
They send another text to keep the conversation going and they pray you will not ignore two messages in a row because they would die of embarrassment.
They complain to their friends about how confusing you are and how many mixed signals you have sent. They drink off the pain with sangrias. They give their number to someone else that night.
They give you a taste of your own medicine. They count down how long you spend missing. Then they wait the same amount of time (or longer) before answering your future messages.
They move on. They decide you are not worth their time. And when you try to come crawling back, they delete your messages, because you have already destroyed your chances with them. They don’t want to settle for someone who ignores them.
They write out lengthy messages about how their feelings are hurt and how they don’t understand why you would drop out of their life without a warning. They spill their heart to you and hope you have a warm, well thought out response.
They swear they are finished with you forever. They promise they are never going to speak to you again. But when you get around to texting them, it only takes them a few minutes to change their mind and text back.
